Siga Adelante

Siga Adelante, or “Moving Forward”, is what the communities of Altus, Poteau, Purcell, Stillwater, Wagoner, and Tulsa have all accomplished in their Hispanic communities.

Siga Adelante is a pilot project initiated by the Oklahoma Department of Libraries with funding received from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation through OCLC Web Junction. The Oklahoma Department of Libraries” (ODL) Office of Library Development authored a successful grant proposal to expand services and resources to Hispanics in six pilot sites through their libraries and literacy offices.

The purpose of the project was many faceted: increase local English as a Second Language (ESL) programs; broaden and strengthen library and literacy outreach to the Hispanic population; offer informative, timely, and relevant programs; provide additional resources; expand community partnerships; and attract more Hispanic customers to the libraries and literacy programs.

An additional goal of the project was that it be designed so that any library or literacy organization in the state or across the nation could replicate the project. Consequently, templates for all programs offered were designed and are readily available on-line. (see links below)

Staff from the Office of Library Development chose the six pilot sites based on the following criteria; each must have a strong library/literacy collaboration; have an established relationship with their Hispanic population; a willingness to try new, innovative programs; and the commitment, determination, and enthusiasm to follow through.

The six (6) pilot sites chosen were: Altus Public Library, Buckley Public Library of Poteau, Purcell Public Library, Stillwater Public Library, Wagoner City Public Library, and Tulsa City-County Library’s Owasso branch.

An initial meeting of the representatives from the six pilot sites and the staff of the Office of Library Development concluded with a decision to offer six topics over a two (2) year period, three (3) in 2007 and three in 2008.

Year one, 2007 saw the development and deployment of three topics: Family Literacy and Parenting; Health; and Immigration and Citizenship.

Year two, 2008 will showcase: Employment and Jobs; Community; and Finances and Consumerism. Each of the pilot sites offered these topics using established templates and materials.

With the conclusion of year one (1) libraries and literacy programs have concluded that this has been an extremely important and successful program. They have also identified areas for improvement.

For more information, marketing examples, completed templates, and a more detailed description of our very successful project, “Siga Adelante” please avail yourself of the February 2008 webinar we presented which is hosted at Web Junction.
