Arrangement and Description
Record Group: 8-E
Jack Callaway Walton, Democrat. Served from January 1923 to November 1923, when he was impeached and convicted. Born March 6, 1881, on a farm near Indianapolis, Indiana. After a teny-year stay in Lincoln, Nebraska, he joined the Army in 1897. Although he saw no foreign service during the Spanish-American War, he did live in Mexico before coming to Oklahoma City in 1903, as a sales engineer. He was Commissioner of Public Works in 1917; mayor of Oklahoma City, 1919 to 1923; elected Governor in 1922, and impeached within the year, serving from January 8, 1923, to November 19, 1923; served in the State Corporation Commission from 1933 until 1939, whe he retired to enter private law practice. He died November 25, 1949, and is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery in Oklahoma City. Click

Agency History The Governor of Oklahoma is the chief executive officer of the state and is elected for a four year term. Principal powers and responsibilities are outlined by the state constitution and by statute and include certain appointive powers, the veto or approval of bills passed by the Legislature, the granting of pardons and paroles, the summoning of special sessions of the legislature, and the calling out of the militia. Moreover, the Governor is directly responsible for the preparation of the state budget, serves as an ex officio member of several boards and commissions, receives reports from various state officers and agencies, and is charged with the duty of seeing that all laws are faithfully executed in the state. |
