Ready to Learn is an early literacy initiative of the Oklahoma Literacy Resource Office in partnership with the Oklahoma Educational Television Authority (OETA). The effort celebrates literacy, promotes family reading, and provides early literacy training and information to parents and child care providers. The Ready to Learn initiative has three primary focuses:
Miss Stewart's Class-Hupfield Academy at Western Village Book DistributionEach month the Oklahoma Literacy Resource Office distributes more than 1,400 books to preschool children throughout the state. Schools selected for this opportunity serve children at risk for low literacy. The goal of this Ready to Learn focus is to place books into the hands of children who may never have owned a book of their own and to help children build home libraries. Books are provided thanks to a number of sponsors including the Krueger Charitable Foundation, Target, local Rotary Clubs, and Delta Theta Chi sorority. Reading Activities for ParentsAlong with the monthly book distributions, children receive activity sheets to take home. These Ready to Learn Fun Stuff activity sheets provide parents and children with games, songs, coloring pages, and even recipes that enhance the specific books given away. Parents are encouraged to make reading at home a fun priority.
