Who Was Jan Eric Cartwright?

Find out about the man for whom our library is named....

Photo of Jan Eric CartwrightJan Eric Cartwright (1938-1986) served as a Member of the Oklahoma House of Representatives (1971-1974), as an Oklahoma Corporation Commissioner (1976-1979), and as Oklahoma State Attorney General (1979-1983).

In 1986, the Oklahoma Legislature named the Capitol Branch of the Oklahoma Department of Libraries in his memory.

Cartwright was not afraid to tackle the “big boys” during his tenure at the Corporation Commission and as Attorney General. His Attorney General Opinion ruling that large corporations owed property taxes to support the public schools was the best example of this. In spite of controversy, the Legislature recognized Cartwright’s dedication and commitment to principle and to the people of Oklahoma.
